Coffee-to-Water Ratio

Use ratios to scale recipes while preserving coffee and water relationships.

By Julian R. NorthcottUpdated July 2026

A ratio expresses coffee mass relative to water mass. It makes recipes portable across batch sizes but does not determine grind, temperature or contact time.

What to evaluate

Keep the decision connected to the actual coffee, brewer and serving goal.

  • Use grams for coffee and water
  • A smaller second number is stronger
  • Distinguish water poured from beverage yield
  • Plan dilution for concentrates

A repeatable workflow

Use one baseline, then change only what the evidence supports.

  1. Choose a baseline ratio
  2. Calculate the dose
  3. Keep grind and timing steady
  4. Adjust strength in measured steps

Common mistakes

These errors make comparisons unreliable or create avoidable problems.

  • Mixing fluid and weight ounces
  • Using ratio changes to fix grind problems
  • Ignoring retained water
  • Scaling beyond brewer capacity
